About Lake Pend Oreille

At more than 1,100 feet deep, Lake Pend Oreille is Idaho’s deepest lake and the fifth-deepest lake in the United States. It boasts 111 miles of largely undeveloped shoreline, much of it public land, and offers uncharted territory for visitors to explore.

Surrounded by remote beaches, bays and fir-draped peaks towering thousands of feet above the surface, Lake Pend Oreille remains one of the most extraordinary natural areas in the Pacific Northwest.

On this crystal clear water, there are endless activities to enjoy. In addition to world class fishing, Lake Pend Oreille offers opportunities to water ski, wake board, paddle board, sail, kayak and canoe. You can find your inner peace with the tranquility of the water, whether paddling the meandering backwaters through the community or enjoying a relaxing boat ride on a sun-filled afternoon.

From the pine and fir-dotted foothills surrounding these waters, to its sandy shores and the boundless depths of the lake itself, whether explored in boots or by boat, Lake Pend Oreille is truly a wilderness of water.

Long prized by paddlers and pleasure boaters alike, Lake Pend Oreille offers everything from sunrise shoreline cruising to all-day, cross-lake excursions. The 43-mile long lake provides plenty of room for wake boarding and water skiing, and its sandy beaches are perfect destinations for a stand-up paddle-board.

Paddlers looking for a wilderness experience on the water can put in at Johnson Creek, on the East side of the lake, and paddle up the Clark Fork Delta to the Green Monarchs, which crown the Coeur d’Alene Mountains and tower almost 3,000 feet above the least-developed stretch of Lake Pend Oreille shoreline. For an altogether more leisurely experience, kayakers can paddle right up to the deck of the Bottle Bay Resort and Marina, directly across the lake from downtown Sandpoint, for a thuckleberry daiquiri.
